The Call of God: A Community of Fishers

A service of Word based on Mark 1:14-20

Have you ever recommended a good restaurant to a friend? You probably talked about how the food tasted, what kind of atmosphere was there. Or what about a movie? Maybe you mentioned the cast, or the plot. But what about church? If you’re like most of us, you probably don’t know where to start. However, in our Gospel reading, we hear about Jesus calling the first disciples, and promising to make them “fishers of people.” How did Jesus do this for His 1st century followers, and how does He do the same thing for His 21st century followers?

Points to Ponder:

1. Have you ever gone fishing? How was it similar to the disciples’ methods? How was it different?
2. What other purposes can people, including you, have in life?
3. In fishing for people, are there any people you would not want to catch? Why?
4. What part of your net needs mending? In other words, what in your life is letting people miss Christ in you?
